You can transition many different ways when installing or adding new wood floors to your home.
Most wood floors are photosensitive and will change color over time. Being a natural product, they will change with the environment. The most common way they change is their color. Let's break down each species that are most common in the Cleveland, Ohio area.
Since we started in business, well over 20 years ago, the #1 callback is when clients have furniture delivered/moved or they have an appliance delivered/moved. To this day, we still get about 4-5 calls a month regarding these issues, either from the client, or the vendor. The most important thing is to take control and let your delivery person know how important it is to protect your wood floors, unfortunately, often, this is not their top priority. We recommend using FloorShell or Ramboard, these are impact and chemical-resistant rolled products that will help mitigate damage, and even cardboard will help. For whatever reason, people assume that the wood floors will not scratch or gouge, this is not true, especially when moving/sliding heavier objects. What complicates this is when a client has an open concept floor plan, where the floors flow into other rooms and there is no natural stopping point, quite often if the damage is bad enough, the floors may have to get refinished or re-coated (adding an additional layer of finish). So be vigilant about protecting those beautiful wood floors!
One of the most common issues we assist our clients with is water damage to wood flooring. While this situation can be stressful, following the right steps can help salvage your existing wood and subfloor. It’s important to understand that this process is not always a quick fix—especially if you’re hoping to preserve the original materials. Here’s how we recommend approaching it:
This post addresses common client complaints and concerns about wood floor refinishing, including challenges with furniture removal, project timelines, product odors, and the reality of floor scratches. It highlights the importance of transparent communication and setting realistic expectations for a satisfying refinishing experience.
\"About 35% of our projects have carpeting on top of the client's existing wood floors or staircase. Clients often ask, "do you remove the carpeting, or do we have to take care of that"? The answer is we can absolutely help you remove the carpeting! Some clients ask if they can do it themselves to save money, of course you can! We note that pulling the carpet is the easy part, the removal of the carpet pad (which is stapled to the wood floor) nails, tack strips and staples are the more time-consuming and tedious aspects. If you would like us to remove it, we would be happy to. We will bundle it up into 4' rolls, weighing no more than 50 lbs. Any larger, most cities (if they take it) will not haul it away, they are also harder to move/manage. If you would like us to perform this service, we are charging $1.50-$1.95 sq foot to remove it and around $295 for a staircase. Depending on who installed the staircase, it is not uncommon to find 50+ staples and nails per tread/riser. We can also haul if off site for an additional fee, usually anywhere from $100-$450, depending on how much there is. Some cities offer free haul away and others will charge you, so it is important to have this conversation first, as this could save you some money on the project!"
Most of our clients are surprised on how quickly they can walk on their wood floors after our work is completed!
Scratches/Gouges: Our most common call. About once a week, we get calls from homeowners, appliance stores, plumbing companies, movers and other home service companies explaining how they have damaged the wood floors. Almost every incident involves somebody dragging something across the wood floors like a bed, couch, table, refrigerator, dishwasher etc. Why does this happen? Mostly because people are in a rush and assume that wood floors are bulletproof and will only get damaged under extreme conditions (not true). They scratch, dent, gouge, cup, crown, shrink and expand under stress.
